THE ENLIGHTENED ONE

Born Siddhartha Gautama in ancient India (near modern-day Lumbini, Nepal) around the 5th–6th century BCE, Buddha was a spiritual teacher and the founder of Buddhism. Raised as a prince in the Shakya clan, he renounced his royal life of luxury after encountering human suffering—old age, illness, and death—prompting him to seek answers beyond the palace walls. At around age 35, after years of ascetic practices and deep meditation under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, he attained enlightenment, becoming the Buddha ("the Awakened One"), realizing the true nature of existence and liberation from suffering.

Buddha's teachings guide followers toward overcoming suffering (dukkha) and achieving spiritual liberation (nirvana). These teachings centered on the Four Noble Truths (the reality of suffering, its origin in craving and attachment, its cessation, and the path to end it) and the Noble Eightfold Path (right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration). Buddha spent the remaining 45 years of his life traveling through northeastern India, teaching the Middle Way of balance and moderation, gathering disciples, and establishing a monastic community. His profound insights deeply impacted millions worldwide, forming the foundation of one of the world's major religions and philosophies while emphasizing compassion, mindfulness, and ethical living.
