Abraham Lincoln

THE GREAT EMANCIPATOR

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865), known as the Great Emancipator, served as the 16th President of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Born in a one-room log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky, to humble frontier parents, he received little formal education—about one year total—but became largely self-taught through voracious reading. After moving through Indiana and settling in Illinois, he worked as a rail-splitter, surveyor, storekeeper, and postmaster before rising as a lawyer, state legislator, U.S. Representative, and national figure through the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates, where he firmly opposed the expansion of slavery. Elected as the first Republican president in 1860, his victory prompted Southern secession and the outbreak of the Civil War.

Lincoln led the nation through the Civil War, preserved the Union, and played a pivotal role in abolishing slavery by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which declared enslaved people in Confederate states free and set the stage for the 13th Amendment. Renowned for his eloquence, integrity (earning the nickname "Honest Abe"), moral conviction, and leadership, he modernized the economy and advanced civil rights. Standing at 6'4" as the tallest U.S. president, Lincoln created a legacy that endures as a symbol of self-made success rising from poverty, the vindicator of democracy in crisis, and one of America's greatest leaders.
