Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was an English mathematician and writer. Collaborating with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, she conceptualized the first algorithm intended for a machine, earning her recognition as the world’s first computer programmer. Lovelace’s visionary insights into computing’s potential laid the groundwork for modern computer science, making her a pioneering figure in technology. Born Augusta Ada Byron, she was the child of the renowned poet Lord Byron and mathematician Anne Isabella Milbanke. In 1843, she translated Luigi Menabrea’s article on Babbage’s Analytical Engine into English, supplementing it with her own extensive notes. The result was an article three times longer than the original that included the world’s first published computer algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers. She presciently envisioned computers manipulating symbols beyond mere numbers, such as music or graphics, foreseeing applications far ahead of her time. Her legacy endures through Ada Lovelace Day, an annual celebration of women in STEM, and the Ada programming language named in her honor.
